Steuartel (Pvt) Ltd. was incorporated for the purpose of assembling single-line auto-table telephone and other electronic equipment in Sri Lanka in 1992. “Steuartel” telephones are being presently assembled in Sri Lanka and as the venture, being the first of its kind in this country, was granted “pioneering status” by the Export Development Board.
The Company initially imported and marketed completely assembled units. A new assembly factory was commissioned in June 1993 in Angulana, Moratuwa, to assemble telephones locally. Presently, the Company imports single-line auto-table telephones in semi-knocked-down and in completely knocked-down condition. The telephone assembly project has resulted in an in flow of foreign investment and transfer of technical know- how from reputed overseas manufacturers.
Steuartel sales are promoted through tenders to the Government, Private Sector organisations involved in technological infrastructure development and through retail local outlets. Additionally, the Company has also undertaken to provide telecommunication services, offering a range of products including PABX systems, ADSL modems & routers, mobile phones and telephone accessories. The Company also supplies telephones to private WLL operators and presently enjoys a market share of over 35%.
Steuartel also markets a range of mobile phones. The Company secured the Agency for NEC Mobile Phones in September 2006. Subsequently, Steuartel was appointed as the sole agents for KONKA and TECNO mobile phones in Sri Lanka. In 2008, Steuartel introduced its own exclusive range of mobile phones with the brand name ‘GS mobile’. This was a giant leap in the Sri Lankan mobile phone industry.

The Company received the ISO 9000-2001 certification on 09th November 2001.
